What is Floating?

The Arctic Studio is Port Macquarie’s newest relaxation centre. Our floats are designed to reduce stress and anxiety; with just 1 hour in one of our tanks = up to 8 hours deep sleep

Our floatation tanks are filled with 500kg of Epsom Salts and the water is set to body temperature. Due to such a high concentration of salt, you literally get to float on the water! Let your mind and body take a much needed time out from the crazy hustle and bustle of everyday life. Reducing stress and anxiety, floating in our tanks for an hour will leave you feeling more relaxed than you have in years.

The Science Behind Floating

Floating has been around since the mid 1950’s and was invented by neo-scientist John Lilly. Floating is also commonly referred to as a ‘sensory deprivation tank’ or ‘isolation tank’.

Floatation tanks have been scientifically proven to help reduce stress and anxiety and can also help with PTSD and depression. Teaching highly anxious and stressed people to meditate is really hard and people often give up. But floating is so easy, everyone can lay in a tank for an hour. Not only does your spinal cord get a rare break from battling gravity, but your nervous system gets a rest from a modern society full of stress. The only other time the human body gets a break from gravity, as if you were an Astronaut flying in outer space, but floating is a lot more affordable and closer to home!

Floating can help drop high blood pressure by getting your body to relax and restore equilibrium and your heart rate variability improves. In the tank, your senses will heighten and you’ll become aware of your heart rate and breathing. As your mind and body unwinds, you will notice your heart beat slow as you drift into a unique state of total relaxation.

Pre-Float Reminders

  • Eat a small meal/snack about an hour before you float to avoid your tummy making noises in the tank.
  • Try to avoid caffeine for the few hours leading up to your float, this helps avoid caffeine jitters and helps you reach that maximum relaxation level.
  • Make sure you don’t shave/wax 24 hours leading up to your float or the salt will sting.
  • Make sure you wear your glasses or bring a change of contact lenses. You can’t wear your contact lenses in the tank.
  • Just a friendly reminder that you cannot float with freshly dyed hair or fake tan

FAQ’s

Can I float if I am pregnant?

Absolutely! The zero gravity and magnesium salt in our tanks take all the pressure off your body. If you have any concerns, or if you’re in your third trimester, make sure you check with your doctor first.

Can I float if I am not a Member?

Both members and non-members are more than welcome to float 😊

Can I float if I'm menstruating?

Of course! Make sure you wear a tampon though, same as you would in a swimming pool.

Do I need to bring swimmers?

It is 100% up to you. Our float rooms are private and to get the full experience we recommend you don’t wear swimmers. However, if you’re more comfortable floating in swimmers, you are more than welcome to.

What if I am scared of being claustrophobic?

Don’t be! You’re 100% in control of the pod lid. Whilst we recommend you close the lid to take advantage of the full experience, you are 100% welcome to leave the lid open if it makes you more comfortable. There’s also a light switch inside the tank to make sure you’re always comfortable and in control.

Is the tank clean?

Absolutely! Our tanks are filtered for 15 minutes between everything single person to maintain the highest water quality, using a microfilter system and a hair trap filtration for larger particles. The water is also sanitised using Ultraviolet light and hydrogen peroxide. This is also the most gentle sanitation system for your skin.

Will I actually float in the water?

Yes! With 500kg of magnesium salts dissolved in our tanks, you will literally float on the water. It’s an amazing, unique experience that is similar to floating in the Dead Sea.

Can I float with fake tan?

Floating with fake tan is perfectly fine, as long as you have NOT applied your tan in the last 48 hours.

I dye my hair, can I still float?

Absolutely! As long as your hair dye no longer washes out on towels or in the shower when you wash your hair, you’re ready to float!

I just got a tattoo, can I still float?

Floating with tattoos is fine, as long as the tattoo isn’t too fresh. We recommend waiting 4-6 weeks after you get a tattoo before floating. Not only will the salt water sting, but it’s not worth risking the aesthetics of your fresh tattoo.

Do I need to bring anything?

We supply everything: towels, shampoo, conditioner, ear plugs, body wash, we have you covered! Since you float nude, you don’t need to bring swimmers, unless that makes you more comfortable. The only thing I would recommend bringing is a hair brush and some deodorant to put on after 😊

Are there any medical conditions that I can't float with?

If you have epilepsy, unfortunately you will not be able to float without written consent from your doctor. If in doubt, we recommend checking with your doctor before floating if you have any serious medical conditions.

What happens if I fall asleep?

It is perfectly safe to sleep in our tanks and it is so relaxing, it’s sometimes hard not to! The water has so much Epsom Salts dissolved that you will literally float on the water while you sleep, so you don’t need to worry about drowning. The worst thing that could possible happen is you splash salt water into your eyes.

Can I shave/wax before floating?

We recommend that you DO NOT shave or wax 24 hours before floating. Not only is there no need, because you will be in the float room by yourself, but the salt is going to sting!

I've been sick, can I still float?

If you are sick with a cold or flu, you cannot float because we do not want to risk you spreading these germs to other guests. Similarly, if you have had Gastro in the last 14 days, you cannot float.

What temperature is the water?

We keep our tanks water at body temperature. This adds to the sensory deprivation experience of the tank because you won’t notice the temperature of the water because it is not hot or cold. Our tanks temperature ranges from 36.5-37.5 degrees.

Can I float with a cut?

You CAN NOT float with an open cut, because of the high concentration of salts, this is also going to sting a lot! You can still float if you cover any cuts with a waterproof dressing 😊
