What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy takes advantage of extreme cold temperatures to minimise recovery time and maximise athletic performance, or to put simply, ‘cold therapy’. Our full body Cryotherapy Chamber is a box shaped mini room. To prepare you for the extreme low temperatures, you will need to get changed into undies, socks, crocs and gloves. Step into the chamber and get ready to chill out. In just 3 minutes, our Cryotherapy Chamber will reset your lactic acid levels, helping you perform to your full potential. Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen and dry cold air to kick start your bodies systematic nervous system through the skins cold receptors. Cryotherapy also has been proven to have amazing anti-inflammatory benefits.

The Science Behind Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy has been in use for over thirty years. It originated in Japan and has become popular in Poland, Germany and Scandinavia. Research into Cryotherapy centres around the effect of short extreme temperatures on Nitric Oxide production. This is important in athletic recovery and cardiac health.

Studies show that Cryotherapy can improve the following:

  • Painful joints
  • Chronic fatigue due to intense over-training
  • Stimulate immunity
  • Skin disorders e.g. Eczema
  • Tinnitus
  • Improved skin elasticity and collagen production
  • Reduces cellulite
  • Slows the effects of ageing
  • Accelerate metabolism enhancing weight loss
  • Improved sleep
  • Improved mood due to release of endorphins
  • Reduces snoring
  • Improved sleep

Full Body vs Localised Cryo Therapy

Full body Cryotherapy is where your entire body is in a chamber for up to 3 minutes, which means your whole body gets the benefits of Cryotherapy!

Localised Cryotherapy is treatment targeted to a specific area of the body. This can be applied for longer periods allowing deeper penetration. This is ideal for sporting injuries, soft tissue damage, micro-vascular dysfunction and reducing inflammation. The cold has an analgesic effect, influencing nerve endings and reducing metabolic activity. Local Cryotherapy is also great for improving eczema, pigmentation and broken capillaries with our Cryo facials leaving your skin with a youthful glow.

Local Cryotherapy can be used on a targeted area by people who are unable to use full body Cryotherapy. This means if you are pregnant, have a heart condition, epilepsy, ryanoids disease, or uncontrolled blood pressure, you won’t miss out!

The Benefits of Cryotherapy

Reduce Recovery Times/Inflammation
Unlike an ice pack, Cryotherapy can target more than one area of inflammation at once. Unlike ice treatment, your muscle tissues do not require down time to recover from Cryotherapy. You can start training again straight away.

Maximise Athletic Performance
With minimal recovery time, and reduced muscle soreness and inflammation, athletes are about to push the boundaries and perform to the best of their ability. Training longer, harder and with shorter recovery times means you really can maximise your athletic performance.

Pain Management
One of the most common side effects of degenerative diseases is painful joints and inflammation. But don’t stress, Cryotherapy is scientifically proven to help, targeting blockages in your blood causing inflammation. By reducing these blockages, and regulating muscle tone can lead to a deduction in pain.

Weight Loss
The extreme low temperatures kick-start your metabolism. Your blood is cleansed from the temperature drop, and rushes around your body to help wake up your metabolism. Our full body cryotherapy chamber not only burns up to 800 calories in under 3 minutes, but improves your metabolisms performance to help you continue to burn calories after your session.

Stimulating skin collagen growth, which increases your skins elasticity. This leaves you looking younger, and your skin with that elusive glow that everybody is chasing. If you want visibly healthier looking skin, you need to give Cryotherapy a go.

Pre-Cryotherapy Reminders

  • Due to the cold temperatures, you will need to remove ALL jewellery prior to your session
  • This one goes out to the ladies! Make sure you DON’T wear a bra with underwire, it’s going to get too cold. If you don’t have one don’t stress, we have wireless crop tops you can borrow in various sizes.

Q. What is the difference between Cryo and an ice bath?

Cryotherapy is an advanced form of an ice bath. Cryotherapy is faster. Cryotherapy takes up to 3 minutes per treatment, vs 15-20 minutes in an ice bath. It’s also more hygienic, because you’re not sharing with other sweaty bodies.

But it gets better! Cryotherapy is more effective! Cryotherapy safely cleanses and detoxes your system from restocking it with fresh oxygen, red blood cells and nutrients. Ice baths however, cool the muscles and tissues, which is not only painful, but can lead to tissue damage and hypothermia. Cryotherapy makes you feel fantastic! Not only do you get a rush from the endorphins released, but your blood is clean and refreshed. You’re skin will look tighter and younger, from the increased collagen production, reducing wrinkles. If that not good enough for you, Cryotherapy also helps aid in weight loss by kick starting your metabolism. You can burn up to 800 calories in just 3 minutes!

Q. Can I still get Cryotherapy if I am not a member?

Both Members and non-members are more than welcome to use the Cryotherapy facilities 😊

Q. Do I need to shower before or after?

Cryo is a dry treatment. This means you won’t need to shower for your treatment.

Q. How long will it take?

Due to the extreme temperatures in our Cryo machine (reaching up to -162 degrees!), you are only in the full body Cryo machine for up to 3 minutes. This means you will be in and out of the store in around 15 minutes?

Q. Is it going to be freezing?

Cryotherapy doesn’t feel freezing, it’s just cold air on the surface of your skin, and completely dry. Don’t panic, we have you covered with our crocs, socks and gloves, and you’re completely free to step out at any time.

Q. Is it safe?

Whole body Cryotherapy involves subjecting the body to temperatures of -100 degrees c to -160 degrees c for up to three minutes. At The Arctic Studio we use the Cryo Arctic Chamber. This equipment is by far the safest and most effective method available. The chamber is filled with BREATHABLE air cooled by liquid nitrogen. This provides optimal systemic and aesthetic benefits in the safest possible way. Other machines use a chamber filled with liquid nitrogen that wafts around the shoulders. This does not provide benefits to the lungs or improved blood flow and collagen production to the facial area.

Using breathable air cooled by nitrogen you are not at risk of directly breathing nitrogen if your head is positioned too low in an alternate machine. There is also less risk of extremities becoming too cold potentially causing frost bite.

If you are concerned about the safety of Cryotherapy for you, talk to us or your doctor. People that should not try Cryotherapy include pregnant women, people with severe high blood pressure, heart conditions and epilepsy.

Q. What do I wear in the Cryo machine?

Because of the extreme low temperatures, you will wear socks, gloves, ugg boots, and undies (and a bra for the girls!). We can supply the socks, gloves and ugg boots! Ladies, feel free to bring your own wireless bra if that makes you more comfortable, otherwise we can sort that out for you too.

Q. Will I get claustrophobic?

No, you’re in complete control. We never lock the door and you’re free to step out at any time. One of our friendly staff members will also be standing right outside the door to help you the whole time, so you will feel nice and safe and comfortable.

Q. I'm pregnant, can I still use the full body Cryo treatment?

No – it is NOT RECOMMENDED to use the full body Cryo treatment whilst pregnant.

Q. Can I exercise before or after Cryotherapy?

Absolutely! If you exercise before, you will be amazed by the noticeably shorter recovery time with the help of our full body Cryo treatments, not to mention your increased energy levels! Want to exercise after? No worries! You’ll still get the increased energy level bonus and you will have a higher pain tolerance, so you will really be able to start pushing your athletic limits and maximise your performance!

Q. How often can I use Cryotherapy?

This is completely up to you. Some people use Cryotherapy up to 2 times a day! Others use it when they feel their body needs it. It depends on your goals and what you are trying to achieve, and how your body responds to the treatments.

Q. Will it help me lose weight?

Absolutely! You can burn up to 800 calories in just 3 minutes in our Cryotherapy chamber. And it gets better! Our Cryotherapy chamber also kick starts your metabolism and improves its performance, to help you lose weight after your session.

Q. Will it hurt?

Once you are dressed and ready, you will step into our Cryotherapy chamber. You will be surrounded with cold air, which cleanses your blood and is amazing for your organs. You can step out at any time and one of our staff members will be right outside the door to help you at any time if needed. You’ll step out feeling absolutely amazing after just 3 minutes!
